Honey-Tumeric Latte for Immune Health and Mental Wellness

Feeling anxious? Who isn't these days? The recipe below is for a Honey-Tumeric Latte, a fresh, spicy twist to your regular Starbucks fix. Tumeric and honey are traditional immune system boosters that reduce inflammation, milk of course aids in relaxation and sleep. We'll be drinking some of this tonight!

2 c whole milk (could substitute almond or coconut)

1/4 tsp dried powdered ginger or 1 tsp fresh grated ginger

1/4 tsp tumeric powder or 1 tsp fresh grated tumeric root

1 dash ground nutmeg

1 tsp to 1 tablespoon of raw honey

1 dash black pepper

2 dash of ground cinnamon

Put fresh ginger and tumeric in a cheesecloth bundle and put this and all other ingredients except honey into a saucepan over low-medium heat (or microwave in a bowl). If using dried spices, the cheesecloth is unnecessary. Simmer until slightly thickened (about 4-5 minutes), then remove from heat and allow to cool. Stir in honey. Remove the cheesecloth bundle and pour milk into a glass. Enjoy warm. Adjust seasoning if necessary. Some people like more pepper and others prefer this without the nutmeg. Some people like this spicier - reduce the milk accordingly.

If you add the honey while cooking the milk, you'll inactivate the enzymes in the honey, for those who care about these things. Note that this cooking process does NOT pasturize honey, so while the enzymes are inactivated, it does not mean that the yeast or botulism spores (if they are present) are dead. Never feed to an infant!!! Babies have different immune systems.

What we like doing is heating some cream first in a cup, then frothing it with a hand frother ($15 at Bed Bath and Beyond!), then pouring the hot tumeric milk into the frothed cream. Sprinkle top with cinnamon. So delicious!
